10 Ideas of Things to Declutter this Autumn 🍂
Autumn is a great season to take stock of what your home needs for the months ahead.
Not a huge clear out. Not letting go of things for the sake of it.
More looking at what you have, what you actually use, and what could make your everyday life feel a little easier as we head into the colder months.
Here are 10 areas worth looking at this Autumn…
1. Garden items you haven’t use this year
Take a look at garden furniture, pots, planters, tools and accessories that have spent most of the summer untouched.
If you’ve consistently walked past something without using it, ask yourself whether it deserves another season taking up valuable space.
2. Outdoor entertaining pieces
Melamine plates, picnic gear, plastic glasses, serving pieces and outdoor tableware can quietly multiply over time.
Keep the pieces you genuinely use and enjoy, rather than storing extras simply because they might come in handy one day.
3. Candles and home fragrance
Autumn often brings candles, diffusers and seasonal scents back into use.
Check what you already have. Discard anything you no longer like, has lost its scent or has been sitting unused for far too long.
4. Food cupboards and kitchen drawers
A change of season is a useful opportunity to look at the back of your cupboards.
Check dates, remove anything you know you won’t use and bring everyday ingredients back into easy reach.
The aim isn’t a picture perfect pantry, just a kitchen that works well for you and those in your home.
5. Mugs, glasses and serving plates
Most of us have a few favourites and a collection of others that rarely make it into everyday use.
If cupboards are becoming difficult to close, have a look at what you actually reach for.
6. Towels and bedding
Autumn is a good time to look at linen cupboards before Winter bedding comes fully into rotation.
Check for worn towels, mismatched bedding, spare sets you never use and anything that no longer suits your needs. And, don; forget to check the expiry date on nay hot water bottles!
7. Bathroom products
Look beyond the obvious toiletries.
Half-used products you don’t enjoy, old samples, branded items from your Summer holiday hotel, products bought for a particular occasion and things that have simply been forgotten can all take up more space than you realise.
8. Paperwork and household information
Not all paperwork needs keeping, only some of it.
Set aside a little time to sort through instruction manuals, old letters, receipts and household documents that have accumulated during the year. Digitise all useful information.
If you’re unsure whether something needs to be kept, please check before letting it go.
9. Children’s belongings
For families, Autumn can be a useful point to look at toys, books, craft supplies and equipment that are no longer being used and why.
Children grow quickly, and what worked for them six months ago may no longer be relevant.
This can also be a good opportunity to involve them in deciding what stays and what could be passed on or saved for other siblings, family or friends.
10. The things you keep ‘just in case’
This is sometimes the trickiest category of all.
A spare item can feel useful because you might need it one day. But, when there are dozens of those decisions sitting in cupboards and drawers, they start to take up a surprising amount of space.
Instead of asking yourself ‘Could I ever use this?’ try asking - ‘If I needed this in the future, would I realistically want to find a home for it again?’
A gentler way to approach Autumn decluttering
You don’t need to tackle your entire home.
Choose one drawer, one cupboard or one small area and give yourself 20 minutes. Start with the things you already know you no longer need, then work from there.
Please remember, there isn’t one right answer when it comes to what should stay in your home.
Your home needs to work for your life, whether you’re raising a family, living alone, preparing for a new chapter, downsizing or simply wanting your everyday spaces to feel a little easier.
Sometimes creating space isn’t about having less. It’s about making more room for what matters.
